Prison Ticks by Jeff aka Ruth Utnage

Inmates develop ticks, little gestures or annoyances that weren't a problem before prison. For instance, gulping liquids. Have you ever been close enough to someone to listen to them suck down liquid? It's a problem for me to listen to. Why is it that they have to suck the fluid in faster than gravity pours it out? Surely they can hear the sound, it sounds piggish. Eww.

Others have physical ticks, like one guy I know. When he completes a flight of stairs he pirouettes. When he exits a door he does the same thing and snaps his fingers and sometimes he even exclaims a satisfied "Yess!". It's endearing to be honest. He says he never did that before prison.

I wonder what's up with that?
