County Roads by Marshall Byers

Slowly pulling over, secluded country road, sun beaming down, blue-violet sky. Rusty old pickup quietly idling, silently thinking, trees swaying in the breeze. I know what I'm here for. I peel my socks and shoes off. Barefoot, I step outside, hot gravel under foot. Standing still, I hear tick, clink, tick, clink, engine cooling. Bottle-green winding river, grass and rock outcrops, tree groves, breeze bending, casting shadows. Puffy bright blue/green eyes, blinking intermittent tears. Breathing in delicious blackberry sticker bushes. Gently walking, tall grass brushing finger tips swish with each step. I've made it, I finally made it.
