I pet a dog By Ryan Erker

I was able to pet a dog yesterday. This may not sound like a big deal however, this is the first time in over five years I have been able to squat down and receive the unconditional love that only a dog can give. Yes, I was licked all over my face. Now this may sound disgusting to most people, and if I was not behind a tall fence I would most likely agree, but in this instance I did not care.

I was raised with dogs. We had Labrador's and German Shorthair Pointers. These were working dogs we used for bird hunting but they were also members of our family. I remember coming home from school on the bus, walking up our long driveway and hearing the excited barking of KC, Fritz, Shotz, and Jake knowing that their buddy was almost home to play with them. As I got older, their excitement did not diminish. Even when I left home and would stop by to see my family my dogs would jump up and down, run in circles and sit on my feet. I did not realize how much I missed them.

I have a friend who says we have to learn to be in prison without prison being in us. I agree. We are able to practice tolerance, patience, and every once in a while we get to hug a dog.
